Umphrey's McGee @ Catskill Chill 2011

This week in NYC live music, we’ve got some interesting shows for the NY Guitar Festival, a two-night stand by Umphrey’s McGee, the 12th annual Freaks Ball kicks off this weekend with two shows at Brooklyn Bowl, and lots of standout indie rockers hit the stage. Here are the highlights as I see ’em…

My Brightest Diamond and Keller Williams will be scoring silent films as a part of the NY Guitar Festival’s Silent Films/Live Guitars series. That should be interesting.

Another standout female vocalist, Sharon Van Etten, plays Mercury Lounge this week. I have a feeling Van Etten’s going to really bust out in 2012.

Webster Hall’s also got an interesting lineup this week, with Cults, Delicate Steve and Dirty Fences.

Delicate Steve:

If bluegrass is more your thing, then don’t miss Greensky Bluegrass @ Sullivan Hall on Thursday night. This is bound to be a good time, if maybe a little sweaty.

The 12th Annual NYC Freaks Ball kicks off Friday night at Brooklyn Bowl, with indie stalwarts Portugal. The Man along with Sam Champion in the opening slot.

But Night II of the Freaks Ball gets even more interesting and definitely a lot more jammy. The night opens with a quartet consisting of Joe Russo, Eric Deutsch, Scott Metzger, and Hagar Ben-Ari (of the Dap-Kings). Later on, the Freaks B’All Stars will perform with an eclectic lineup of Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Ron Johnson (Warren Haynes Band), and a bunch of other special guests still to be announced (sorry, no really good video options that would possibly round out this big crew…just go!).

And, last but definitely not least, Umphrey’s McGee is back in NYC for a two-night stand at the Best Buy Theatre. If you’re into their sound and style at all, then I highly recommend making it out this week. These dudes have been on such a consistent tear, and Jefferson Waful’s light show continues to impress me (see a prime example below).
