New Band to Me: Battles

battles.jpgMy brother-in-law sent me a link a couple days ago and I finally got around to checking it out yesterday. The link was straight to a YouTube video by a band called Battles; the song is called “Atlas.” Check out the video here.

Who are Battles, you ask? “The group’s lineup is composed of well-known musicians, including ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier, ex-Don Caballero guitarist Ian Williams, ex-Lynx guitarist Dave Konopka, and Tyondai Braxton (son of Avantgarde Jazz musician Anthony Braxton), who also plays guitar and keyboard and creates live voice samples.”

The lineup sounds cool enough, and that song “Atlas” is wildly hypnotic. I’ve become completely obsessed with this song, maybe because of the chipmunk vocals, maybe because of the driving force of a backbeat, maybe because of the evil blips and bloops coming out of their keyboards, or maybe none of the above. What do you guys think?

The live version is there to give you a taste of both sides, and unfortunately — I completely missed their US Tour (which they just finished up). They played Chicago, Boston, Philly, D.C. and more, and my radar completely passed these guys up. They’re in Europe for May and possibly beyond and I can’t wait to see what these guys are up to when they get back to the States.

  1. Battles is one of the most amazing bands I have ever seen live. I saw them in Webster Hall New York last spring og and they were absolutely amazing and creted this very intense athmosphere of hypnotic sound that just pulled you in. I didnt know them much, and its hard to say how much of the stuff was improvised, but it really doesnt matter. They are amazing. Go see them if you get the chance. I produce chill out and downbeat for my own band Ganga and other acts, and their work is a great inspiration to me. Even though its very different from what I do myself. Their first EP – just called Battles – is full of the most beautiful sounds and athmospheres, most of it captured live playing I think.
Their live setup is so cool too. With the drummer in front, controlling the pace.
Fantastic – where have they been all my life.
    Enjoy them when you can!
