FESTY PREVIEW: Equifunk 2013 (The All Inclusive Funk Festival)

Boasting the kind of ferocious funk collaborations you’d expect to find in New Orleans during Jazzfest, as opposed to the remote Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, sets itself apart this summer — an unsuspecting gem among 2013 festivals.

For the past 5 years, has pioneered an all-inclusive two-day tradition at Camp Equinunk in the hills of Northeast Pennsylvania. Essentially a summer camp getaway for adults, this fest combines the cost of lodging, meals, beverages and unlimited beer into one convenient and affordable ticket ($350 cabins, $225 VIP camping or $185 regular camping for the all-inclusive amenities).

Not your average fest: is basically a private party in the Poconos hosted by people whose taste in music is only outmatched by their hospitality (staff will literally ride around on golf carts to refill people’s beer). The venue is a lakeside summer camp transformed into an adult playground for the weekend — a grassroots production that values creating the best experience possible over profit margins. Each year the attendance has doubled in response to their ability to deliver an utterly craveable weekend escape.

Best bang for your buck: tickets are all-inclusive, covering your choice of accommodations in either private cabins or lakeside campgrounds, three meals a day and unlimited draft beer. For those planning where to spend the rest of their summer music budget, remember that the upfront ticket price is all you’ll spend for the entire weekend.

Tickets are limited: will cap attendance at around 1,500 this year. Tickets available at www.equifunk.com ($185-$360)

Sunday Funday:

More Than Just Music: Because the fest is located on a summer camp, guests enjoy full perks of the campus facilities with outdoor activities like afternoon pool parties with a giant water slide, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, baseball and tennis courts (a lucky fan won a tennis match vs. Simon of the New Mastersounds) and more.

“Each year our attendance has doubled, but it still keeps the intimate vibe we set out for,” explained festival creator Eric Kamen. “We may look like a simple festival at first glance, but the joy brings to that valley is so much more dynamic. The all-inclusive set up feels like you’re are at someone’s personal party — to not have to carry your money around to get a drink or a bite to eat is an invaluable feeling. The pool scene in the afternoons is unreal, and at night the main stage exudes energy of club show within the ease of an outdoor environment.” Kamen added, “We take pride in our lineup and really listen to our fans so each year they get the best possible experience.”
