As a part of ’s new improv Wednesday nights (most recently featuring four amazing, unique shows led by in June), starting on July 11th, world-renowned and New Orleans-based drummer will be playing at , for three consecutive Wednesday.

As a longtime diehard and recent transplant to this ginormous town from the Crescent City, I’ve had the pleasure of watching Stanton play in countless settings over the years. As an outgrowth of being the Big Easy’s most in-demand drummer, Moore is a popular choice whether its an all-night superjam or a surprise sit-in and I’ve been lucky enough Moore join a who’s-who of big-time players on the Southern jam scene including , , Anders Osborne and Luther Dickinson to name a few. But no matter who Stanton is laying it down for, whether with (in its traditional, instrumental form, or with any of the touring vocalists the band has run with (Cyril Neville, Chali2Na, Corey Glover, and Theryl “Houseman” DeClouet)), the Trio, Dragon Smoke or the incomparable Garage a Trois, Moore is the heartbeat, always fueling the performance with his seemingly ceaseless source of energy (he notably played 27 different times over 10 days during Jazz Fest in 2011 and maybe topped that figure in 2012).

It wasn’t until this past Wednesday at while playing alongside Jonathan Freilich and that I was able to get such a rare vantage point of Stanton at work. From stage left in the corner of , we had the perfect angle to peer into Moore’s mini drum laboratory as the scientist did WORK, making magic look easy with an array of tools and tricks you don’t see most drummers attempting without the aid of smoke and mirrors. This is going to be a memorable run and those who make it for all three will be in for something entirely different each night. Although it says Trio on each date below, you can almost bank on the fact that from one week to the next, there’ll be little parallel. So get there early, stake out a table, tip your bartenders and marvel as Moore tears up the playbook and invites a revolving door of special guests to burn up the swanky and historic Mint. Wednesdays are about to get a whole lot funkier.
