LMB NYC: This Week’s Concert Calendar (Jan. 9-15)

Brothers Past @ Brooklyn Bowl | photo by WHITperson

This week in NYC shows is another mellow one compared to the normal onslaught of great concerts, but there are definitely some interesting happenings, including the New York Guitar Festival, Girls and Real Estate at Terminal 5, and Brother Past‘s triumphant return to Brooklyn Bowl.

For all the guitar and gear heads among us, this week brings a bunch of hot shows that are a part of the New York Guitar Festival. From amazing guitarists scoring silent films to multi-artist tributes of jazz guitar greats like Jim Hall, there’s a lot to dig into….so here’s a little Nels Cline shreddery to whet your appetite:

If guitars aren’t quite your thing, then how about a little Hammond B-3? Dr. Lonnie Smith — one of my favs from last year’s NYC Winter Jazz Fest — will bring the organ funk to the Jazz Standard on Wednesday:

One of the bigger shows this week brings two indie stalwarts — Girls and Real Estate — together for a SUPER solid co-bill at Terminal 5.

But the show I am most stoked about this week is Brothers Past at Brooklyn Bowl on Friday night. Although BP technically played two weeks ago (opening for the Disco Biscuits), they haven’t played their own two-set gig in NYC for while. That’s partly because their Brooklyn Bowl show last August got shafted by Hurricane Irene, adding yet another occasion where this band has had horrible luck with weather (see Camp Bisco IX and their Feb 2010 show at Brooklyn Bowl for great examples).

Here’s hoping that we don’t get some freak blizzard, because I think they’re due for a killer NYC throwdown.

Read on for all the details and listings and a few other good options…
