Happy holidays, dudes and dudettes! Hope you got everything you wished for and downed copious amounts of egg nog. Now, on to more important stuff than family gatherings and gift exchanges….live music! Naturally, there are ton of great shows going on this week in NYC as we lead up to New Year’s Eve, including some multi-night holiday runs, some late-night throwdowns, and plenty of NYE parties that don’t involve watching a ball drop in 10-degree weather.

The Disco Biscuits kick off a three-night run at the Best Buy theatre tonight. The run includes a bunch of DJs and dance-oriented acts, a few late-night after-parties, and a big Wednesday-night finale w/ Brothers Past and Orchard Lounge in the opening slots.

Gov’t Mule is also doing a multi-night run, heading back to the familiar Beacon Theatre for their post-holiday shows (I think these will be especially ripe for sit-ins with so many great musicians in town).

And, of course, the heavy-hitters of the jam world, Phish, are back home at Madison Square Garden for their standard four-night NYC finale.

As always, Phish has attracted a number of official after-parties, including Marco Benevento, Steve Kimock & Friends, Superhuman Happiness (by Dog Gone Blog), as well as The New Deal, who will be in town for a few of their final performances ever as a band.

But if you need something bit less jammy, there are still plenty of great shows to check out, especially for New Year’s Eve, which has become more than just a jamband party-night. Here are a few of my recs…

The Budos Band will finish off another great year of horn-laden grooves at the Music Hall of W’burg.

The always-entertaining Gogol Bordello will be raging at Terminal 5.

Deer Tick and a bunch if their “Friends” will celebrate the end of the year at Brooklyn Bowl.

Fitz & The Tantrums — who had a stellar 2011 — will throwdown at the Gramercy Theatre.

For more dance-oriented NYE fare, check out Holy Ghost! along with other DFAm family at the DFA Holiday Party (@ the Standard).

And, in what seemed to be THE year that electronic music truly busted out into the mainstream, it seems only fitting to give a nod to Deadmau5 who had a huge year and will end 2011 at Pier 36.

Of course, the holidays in NYC are pretty busy in the concert world, so check out the listings below for lots more shows to choose from. And, as always, make sure to have fun but also keep it safe wherever you choose to party down for your end-of-year celebration.

Cheers to a great 2011!
