LMB NYC: This Week’s Concert Calendar (Nov. 14-20)

The NYC concert calendar chills out a bit this week. But there’s still plenty of action, including a jam-packed weekend of shows that’s going to set up some tough decisions. Here’s the week’s highlight reel…

Wednesday night, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones make their NYC return — w/ original member Howard Levy — at The Town Hall. We can expect plenty of eclectic sounds from Béla’s banjo, Futureman’s “drumitar,” Levy’s piano/harp, and of course, some interesting fretwork on Victor Wooten’s bass….

Wed & Thurs, there’s an interesting event at Bowery electric being billed as Mats City: A Tribute Concert to The Replacements. The show will feature Ted Leo, Craig Finn (of The Hold Steady), Brian Fallon, Charlie Mars, Alejandro Escovedo, Matt Pinfield and bunch of other special guests. Can’t wait

Friday night, Marco Benevento and his trio returns to NYC for some keyboard freakouts at the 92Y in Tribeca. Superhuman Happiness is the opener, so this should make for an interesting night.

If you’d prefer your grooves a bit closer to the JB’s and Meters variety of funk, then the New Mastersounds is a sure bet. They’re at Highline Ballroom.

Saturday night also brings some great options, especially for those into something with a bit more world/international flare. Toubab Krewe will throwdown their West African-inspired grooves at Littlefield in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn (a great local option for yours truly). These guys always bring lots of energy and good vibes.

For something a bit more authentically African, Tinariwen is bringing their “Tuareg desert blues” to Webster Hall on Saturday night….which is sure to be a killer show.

Also on Saturday, Keller Williams is doing his loop-based one-man band thing at Brooklyn Bowl. Good ole’ Keller.

But for a bit more soul out of your one-man band, check out Raul Midon at the Highline Ballroom on Sat & Sun.

For something a bit more in the indie dance-pop realm, I’d suggest hitting Small Black at the Glasslands.

And Sunday night, Deer Tick hits Webster Hall with their brand of Americana/roots-rock.

As always, those just make up the topline hitlist on my radar. Read on for a few other great options this week…
