FAIL: Danzig debacle @ Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011

I guess Danzig is a bit of a primadonna. His set on Friday at Fun Fun Fun Fest was a pretty big deal and he was all set to headline the Auditorium Shores stage that was ready, approved and waiting for him to rock it. That’s not at all how it went down, though…

Here’s the lowdown from brooklynvegan:

Danzig, complete with Danzig, Samhain and Misfits sets, was supposed to play at 8:15pm at Fun Fun Fun Fest last night (11/4). He didn’t finally get on stage until 9:00 which was especially noticeable at the Austin festival which otherwise runs completely on time. You could tell it wasn’t the fest’s fault too. During the entire 45 minute delay, Danzig’s stagehands were constantly doing random stuff, most notably putting up blue tarps on either side of the stage – a clearly unplanned action that was apparently supposed to make the stage warmer. Around 8:45 a guy came out and started crossing songs off the setlist.

From Rolling Stone…

At 10 p.m., when the promoters were required to enforce the city’s curfew and turned off the equipment, Danzig had only gotten through two Misfits songs, much to the loud disappointment of fans, many of whom had traveled from many miles away according to comments on Facebook and Twitter. Danzig encouraged them to riot in protest, but other than some tossed trash, most politely declined.

I would have been into this set for the Misfits material so this would have been a huge bummer if I was on-hand to see it. Sorry to all those other fans, too and bummer to the festival booker who had to go public with such a sob story instead of actually getting to see “Skulls” like he would have hoped.

The promoter mentions the “10 pm curfew” for the reason of the shut down. BUT if you look at the City of Austin City Ordnances -see link-http://austinnoise.org/the-austin-noise-ordinance/title-8-parks-and-recreation/  It states “sound level must be below 85 db between 10am-10pm and there is a late night extension that can be applied for (you would think a concert of this size would have that as an “insurance plan”) and “between the hours of 10pm-2am per the extension the db level cannot exceed 80db” this move by fff fest was just poor taste. I would expect this kind of thing to happen at an independent club ran by a total scumbag, not a headliner at a festival. Also what kind of professional bashes the band that just headlined and drew in alot of money for that show? This show is run by total ametures. Shutting down the headliner, then running to facebook to save face. Pretty lame. I want my money back.

Man. You don’t live in Austin, obviously. That 2am curfew is ONLY applied during SXSW music festival and only in zoned areas. SXSW actually uses the same location and shuts down the park shows at 9pm. Trust us, sound issues in Austin are the paper like every other week. Venues, bars, even restaurants have been shut down for less. Way to go “live music capital of the world.”
