8/26 update: Most shows on Saturday and Sunday canceled due to Hurricane Irene
This week in NYC live music, we’ve got a few solid clubs shows going on, plus two very different NY-area festivals. As I mentioned last week, Deerhunter’s hitting Webster Hall for a few nights and comes highly recommended for a bunch of reasons already stated and posted. I’m also keen on two Saturday shows…the first is a friend’s band, called The New Facility. They may be new, but they’ve definitely honed in on a cool sound (a little synthy, a little dark, and lots of interesting open space and sounds; just check it out). The second Sat’night show on my radar is Brothers Past, who will bring their dark, drum’n'bass improv and indie/electroc songwriting chops to Brooklyn Bowl Saturday for the late slot. If their recent show from the 8×10 in B’more is any indication of what’s in store for Saturday, then it should be a pretty epic dance party (I recommend listening all the way through track 3 — “Big Blus Apples” — for exhibit A).
Outsie of the smaller rock clubs, the NY metro area is playing host to two festivals this weekend. For the more mainstream jam crowd, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan festival kicks off at Governors island, and features DMB along with a fairly deep lineup of interesting support acts, including: The Roots, Citizen Cope, Gogol Bordello, moe., Robert Randolph, Béla Fleck, Soulive Vieux Farka Toure, The Wood Brothers, Trombone Shorty, and a bunch of others.
For something a bit less jammy, there’s the Afro Punk festival at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn (between Ft. Greene and Vinegar Hill) — a free festival featuring headliners like Cee Lo Green, Santigold, Janelle Monae, Fishbone, and Toro y Moi, etc…
As always, summer in NYC continues to the deliver the goods and provide constant concert temptation.
