Cash at the Door? Awesome. Bob Dylan Played SF Last Night

Bob Dylan played The Warfield in San Francisco last night and brought fans in under one of the more innovative ways to stop scalpers and ticket brokers from getting the leg up on deserving fans — they made tickets for sale on a cash-only, line forms at the door basis. Pretty impressive.

Pollstar has the story…

“The ticketing experiment was a very worthy endeavor,” Goldenvoice’s David Lefkowitz told Pollstar. “We set up street performers, port-o-potties and food vendors for the patrons in line. While the show would have sold more with advance sales, we were happy to take this ride with Bob Dylan and his team. It would be nice to see other artists and promoters begin to try different ways to shake up the rapidly escalating fees and scalper dominance.”

    I think that it is a fantastic idea in theory. And I think it will work great with small venues. However, when you start to get larger crowds, longer lines, you end up with logistical problems (lines stretching for blocks) and security issues (people cutting in line, leading to arguments and possibly fights). Ideally, everyone would get along and there would be no problems. But, unfortunately, in this day and age, you have to consider liability. Now, from a business perspective, they can either choose to pay for insurance or have ticketmaster sell advanced tickets for a small fee. I, like most others, am pulling for a revolution in the ticketing industry, but I don’t think that this is the solution. Anyone agree or disagree?

    Are you kidding me? Do you buy tickets through Ticketbastard? Personally I don’t consider 20-40% of the ticket price to be a small fee. Sure, using the computer instead of heading down to the venue is convenient, but $11.50+ PER TICKET!
    Unless I’m sure it will sell out the day of ticket sales I will never buy through Ticketbastard again, even then I will go to the venue. Unfortunately Red Rocks doesn’t have a box office so I do have to get screwed occasionally.
