Meanwhile, the June 10 issue of Rolling Stone, which hit our mailbox last Wednesday, includes a festival guide with a neato map that mentions Furthur — the new band of Grateful Dead figureheads Phil Lesh and Bob Weir — along with Phoenix, Kings of Leon and Al Green as headliners for Outside Lands. The map is on page 36 of the issue with Russell Brand writhing on the cover.
Outside Lands organizers have been sitting on the full lineup and waiting to release it on June 1st, but yesterday some eagle-eyed music fans noticed that an ad a sidebar in the new issue of Spin has hit stands ahead of this release date showing the full a partial line-up, which includes headliners Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, and Phoenix, with The Gossip, soul legend Al Green, and BlackStar also on the bill.
I’m pretty excited that this festival got condensed. While I’ve gone both years they’ve held the festival so far and really enjoyed myself both times, the festival always seemed a bit big and/or in possession of this “filler” quality with some of the bands and vendors chosen. At times, especially last year, it felt so overly mainstream and bourgeois that I wondered if this festival would still have a place in the future of the San Francisco (and national) music scene. I’m thinking this two-day lineup could help it remain a fixture on the scene for years to come, especially considering they lowered the price considerably from last year’s gouge fest.
See you in the beer line, folks.
