Breaking News: Parents Won’t Let 14-Year Old Attend Phish Concert

Phish concert….. parents wont let me go? [Yahoo! Answers]

Ok so i am 14. My favorite band in the WHOLE world is phish. They are almost like a hippie band and they play very happy music about random things. Well last summer my parents went to thier concert and i wanted to go but they said no beacause people do things there that i shouldn’t be exposed to. Their going again this summer and i REALLY want to go but again they said no!!!!!! They said because people do drugs there. but really i am a responsible person!! It’s not like im gonna go up some random hippie and say ” Yo give me some pot!” I wouldn’t do that. So i don’t really understand why they wont let me go….Any idea???!!!??!!

I’m speechless; the parents can go, but the 14-year old can’t? We at LIVE MUSIC BLOG.com will not stand for this injustice!

    Your parents work hard and probably want this time as time for them to escape and have some fun without the responsibility of being a parent. Then again they are parents so they have to make some adult decisions about balancing your needs and their needs.

    Two suggestions – first is the Movie coming out in 2 weeks. What a ‘safe’, family thing to do. Second – there are 29 shows on this tour. Why can’t they go alone to one and bring you to another.

    Took acid at my first Phish show just after I turned 15. IT was a blast and I’ve been to many shows since- and am a pretty darn successful hard working adult these days.

    That being said- I probably wouldn’t let my 14 year old go see a Phish show w/out me knowing what goes on there… If I had one.

    My dad and older brothers were always cool as shit when i was growing up. My pops took me and my brothers to see pink floyd, grateful dead, rolling stones. Then i took my pops to see phish not once but twice. And the shows he caught with me were no slouch (11.02.1996 and 07.23.1997).

    This kids parents sound like a couple of pricks to be honest. I was 13 when i saw pink floyd. I was 14 when i saw the grateful dead. I was 15 when i saw my first phish show. Dropped dose for the first time when i was 16 at a phish show and loved it. Opened my eyes a bit. I turned out fine.

    I feel bad that this kid has such douchy parents. What are they trying to shield this kid from? Life? Most kids who are sheltered like that turn into the biggest fucking drug addicts i have ever seen because they were denied the chance to learn and experiment…so they just go right off the deep end the first chance they get.

    I don’t believe a 14 yr old needs to drop acid. Their brains are still growing, and “opening your mind” aka “getting fucked up” at 14 isn’t going to help him any at this point. Maybe the parents should take the kid with them to the show but not do anything illegal this time. There is a time and place for kids to try things, and personally I think 14 is too young for that sort of thing. I have been to lots of shows (live in Eugene, OR, saw the dead tons of times) and had a blast. But, I don’t agree that just because a parent won’t let their 14 yr old do drugs at a show will turn him into a douche(see above post). Children (which 14 yr olds are) aren’t mentally capable of making certain responsible decisions that can keep them out of trouble. This kid has plenty of time to experiment on his own, sneak around behind his parent’s backs, etc. He can wait until he can go on his own, sneak out and go on his own, or have an honest discussion with his folks about why they don’t want him to go.
    Letting your kids get fucked up at 14 isn’t really the smartest thing to do is it?

I was 14 when I saw my first show and I didn’t do any drngs even though I knew what pot, blooms, and L was but I went cuz the roses where free and I didn’t plaim it on myself. All I can say is do what ever you can kid to get to what ever show you can cuz it’s not just about the almost 3 hours of music that makes you slip and bump your head but the other 21 hours around with people, places, and love.     Went to the second night of Albany last fall with my my buddy and his 8 and 9 year old. It was one of the better phish experiences I’ve had. They really dug it- and if you do it right, communicate with your kids about what’s going on , it can be a truly great experience.
