I’m psyched to see another DVD release by Umphrey’s McGee, because I have the other live DVD’s they released and I rarely think of them as disappointing in the slightest. Their first live DVD, Live at Lake Coast, captures the band at their peak with original drummer Mike Mirro — who went onto to become a doctor — and there are some solid gems on there like “Utopian Fir” and “40’s Theme.” And I’m partial to their Wrapped Around Chicago: New Years at the Riv because I there for both nights and was blown away, and this document allows me to relive all those good memories with the highlights being the ridiculous “Nopener” with Mini Kiss and the rocking “Robot World” that follows.
Today’s release of Soundstage Presents: Umphrey’s McGee – Live will definitely be on my list of must-buys.
During the summer of 2007, Umphrey’s McGee came home to Chicago to record a special live performance for the award-winning PBS music series Soundstage at WTTW’s Grainger Studio. Today, the incredible 13-song set hits stores on DVD – including six favorites not shown during the original PBS broadcast.
UMPHREY’S McGEE – LIVE features over two hours of dazzling music presented in High-Definition and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, plus two bonus tracks (“Made to Measure” and “Wizard Burial Ground” recorded at the legendary Auditorium Theatre in Chicago). A visual showcase of the band’s spontaneity and innovative prowess, UMPHREY’S McGEE – LIVE is available at FYE, Best Buy and Value Music stores.
The DVD can also be ordered online from Amazon.

Here’s a clip of “Got Your Milk (Right Here)” recorded on 11/3/06 at Barrymore Theater, one of my favorite UM songs* that hasn’t gotten any surround sound treatment yet.
* – i believe this was actually a cover from Jake’s old band Ali Babi’s Tahini.
