Not Everyone is a Phish Fan Now

Yesterday felt like a really special day to me. I was generally buzzing the entire day after the news was confirmed that Phish was getting back together. It’s especially fitting for me given that this blog started around the band’s tour in 2004 leading up to Coventry. Now that they’re coming back, I’m excited for the possibility to cover some of the shows on this site and I generally think the whole internet is going to get a boost in Phishiness if they really play more than a few dates during 2009. But I’m also not looking forward to competing for tickets to the Hampton shows, and neither are any of the other serious fans that would feel that it’s their destiny to see these first reunion shows.

Even though all the hotels are already sold-out in the area, it doesn’t look like everyone is thrilled about the return of the band. From John in the comments bucket:

I am a music fan. I have thousands of albums in my collection. A friend gave me 3 Phish albums. Over the months, every time I heard a garbage song, I would look and sure enough, it was Phish. I did something I have never done before or since. I deleted every Phish song from my collection. Their music is pure garbage.

Hey man, you gotta give them a chance. Trey is sober now. I personally think they’re going to rip. Maybe you’ll like their new tunes, too. You’ll most likely hear them on the radio when they return. Most sites on the internet that you read will definitely cover the news of their return. It’ll be especially interesting when Pitchfork starts covering the band, too; I predict they’ll be a bit more positive this time around.

I'm the Editor. HOLLA.

Well, thanks for sharing John. I think it was Trey who said in bittersweet motel that the haters are offended that so many people enjoy something that they don’t like. Thus, they feel the need to talk shit and try to belittle the band and their fans. Well good riddance, the scene is better off without ‘em.

All I can really say is that I am absolutely fine with people not liking Phish. We are going to have enough trouble getting to these shows. The more the merrier really no longer applies when thousands, possibly tens of thousands will be turned away without tickets. Pure garbage huh? Laughable.

I would love to read some positive vibes coming from pitchfork about any band in the “jamband” community, but I highly doubt it will happen. Even with the recent news of the Phish return.

Pitchfork seemed to like the album that the Benevento/Russo Duo did, but that’s about the extent to which I’ve seen them cover the crossover acts. Maybe My Morning Jacket, too — although they’re not 100% jamband stylin’.

i know the hampton reunion will be a intimate return, but why not come back with a bang at a phish festival. coventry wasn’t the best, or their best, or ideal in so many ways, but it has a special place in my heart. i have not attended a festival since actually. maybe it wouldn’t have the same effect, or create all of the hype, but at least everyone could attend, instead of the select few, or the privileged few with deep pockets.

either way, glad to see them back in the game.

I personally would feel better about the situation if there were people like John ou there. Unfortunately for people like me and my friends from home who used to spend our highschool days in the 90s going to shows, we will be getting screwed out of our Hampton tickets and little youngins will be there in our places. My excitement is mixed with nervousness as Phish is going to get blown out of control again.

I plan on driving over 800 miles to catch them in Hampton and I am with you guys who are sick about kids showing up just for the scene or to buy drugs, which most of them will get ripped off anyways. I’m traveling that far for love of the band pure and simple. Garbage…. my A$$

I got really tired of the glowsticks, and jackass lot rats breaking into my car. I will NOT be going to Hampton, but will catch the local spots if trey has gotten over himself.
