Medeski, Martin & Wood | New MP3, 2008 Tour Dates

Medeski Martin & Wood at Slow Food Rocks

Medeski, Martin & Wood are going out on tour soon to support a new experiment:

The Radiolarian Series – named after a type of single-celled organism with dazzlingly intricate exoskeletons – is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write/record/tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, will convene for brief writing retreats, perform only that new material on tour, record the material immediately after getting off the road, and release it as an album on their own Indirecto label.

The process will be repeated three times, resulting in three albums – the first of which,
Radiolarians I, will be in stores on September 30th.

We’ve got the first mp3 from the project here and I imagine the band will be having some fun on their fall tour. They were having a blast when they played at Slow Food Rocks. I still have a ton of photos to put up from that festival, too. Read on for the dates.

caught 2 shows on the second leg of the radiolarian series. good stuff. the last night of the tour was one of the best mmw shows i have seen. there is a great recording from shackaholic on bt.etree.org if your interested. its the best of the 4 sources.

a word of warning/advice, if you are a mmw fan, and open to spacy improv, check out a show on this tour. the setlist will not include anything you have heard to date, its all new. ideally you can catch a couple shows. the 2 shows i caught were 2 days apart. it was amazing to see how much the music evolved. these shows are not the best place to introduce people to mmw though, or for your first show. if you want to here a familiar mmw setlist, go to a festival, or wait for the radiolarian series to finish. that being said, the lousiville show is in my top 10 of shows i have seen ever.

thanks for the info … just got my tix for the Fillmore show in SF. I love these guys and am looking forward to new stuff and what sounds like an interesting format for a tour.

I’m thinking about doing some of the November Cali shows. Gonna have to decide soon though if I really want to fly out there. I’ve already done two of the Radiolarian tours (saw five shows total) so I figure why not go for the trifecta.

I agree that the 7/18/08 Louisville show was amazing. It was definitely a top five MMW show for me. Very special experience that night.
