Yonder Mountain String Band Rocks the DNC Today

I thought I’d give a little props for one of the lesser-known bands that got booked for the Democratic National Convention going on right now in Denver, CO. Yonder Mountain String Band is scheduled to appear today right before the Obama acceptance speech — what a time slot — which isn’t all that surprising given the geography that this newgrass band calls Colorado their home. They’re expecting up to 75,000 people today. Amazing.

I haven’t followed the happenings there too much, but I loved the Monitor Mix post on the subject previewing the events. And I know Rage Against the Machine played last night, which we were hoping on getting a photographer for but that fell through at the last minute. Oh well.

Yonder Mountain String Band, hailing from Nederland, Colorado (forty miles northwest of Denver), is honored to perform at this year’s Democratic National Convention held on Denver August 24-28. Yonder will take the stage on the final day of the convention – August 28th at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium – just prior to Barack Obama’s highly anticipated acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination. Also scheduled to perform at the event are will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, and Stevie Wonder.

Any Denver live music fans care to share in the comments about the festival-like atmosphere around town? I’m curious.

its a pretty weird scene around town. i work right downtown and its been like NYC or San Fran on a busy day at rush hour- its tough to walk down the street. obama schwag vendors everywhere. people with signs ranging from jesus freaks to abortion activists to “stop bird porn” walking around.

yesterday there was a “protest” march from the rage concert to the pepsi center, it was stopped outside the pepsi center without incident. im gonna take pics today and post over at coventry. i

met some convention attendees last night at a bar- they liked whiskey shots…but said that at mile high today they are not selling alcohol at the event and security is gonna be nuts. I-25 though downtown denver and next to mile high is going to be completely shut down at 5:30 today until secret service decides its ok to open it up again.

there are rumors of secret shows that are popping up- last night aparrently z-trip, cold war kids, and sonic youth played somewhere at an art gallery but none of us could find it.

Patterson Hood said he was going to be in town for the convention. Not sure if he was scheduled to play or not. Anyone heard?

yes i too see these shwag vendors, YMSB a the DNC? thats awesome, and incredible, i just wish they could mention the oh so taboo subject that most democrats seem to be in agreement of, regarding these heady music fans being persecuted . They are alienating a large base of voters, forcing them into independent camps.
