Weekly Roundup | Outside Lands Wrapup

Outside Lands (Twin Peaks in the distance)

Yesterday was the third and final day of the inaugural Outside Lands music festival, and there were a lot of mixed reviews on how well the event went for those in attendance. Personally, I had a lot of fun and I felt that I got to see most everything I wanted to see on all three days. The question on whether or not I enjoyed everything I saw on Friday would be questionable, but only because the promoters seemed to put Beck on the wrong stage resulting in logistical issues and a host of agitated festival patrons. Other than that, I seriously loved every second of the fest, and I hope to see it return sometime next year.

More updates will be coming from me and sure to be coming from the Coventry and Hidden Track folks, who I got to meet up with and chat with while the festival was happening. Great great times.
Read on for a roundup of our posts from last week and stay tuned for tons more updates this week.

  • Drive-By Truckers, Hold Steady to Tour Together This Fall
Just saw this news coming through the inbox and it just rocks — plain and simple: You’ve heard the rumours – and this rock and roll wet dream is coming true.Drive-By Truckers and The Hold Steady have teamed up…
  • My Morning Jacket | More Dates, New Video, Punctuality Promised
Just as My Morning Jacket returned to the US in support of Evil Urges, they announced 12 additional dates in Europe during the months preceding their hopefully earth shattering New Year’s Eve show at Madison Square Garden. To the…
  • LeRoi Moore, R.I.P.
We are unbelievably sad to have to report this news right now. LeRoi Moore, saxophonist for Dave Matthews Band, has reportedly passed away at a Los Angeles hospital following a string of complications from an ATV accident back in June….
  • Video and Thoughts on Dave Matthews Addressing the Crowd Last Night
I’m still sorta reeling from the news that LeRoi Moore passed away yesterday, which is odd considering I haven’t spent much time with the band in recent years. I think the nostalgia is coming back, though. I saw three great…
  • From the Pit | All Points West, Day 1
I wasn’t sure what to expect from Day One of All Points West. I usually hit the smaller Northeast festivals like Mountain Jam and the Vibes. But the setting was without compare. From almost anywhere on the festival grounds, a…

All photos by James Y LMB contributor, Mike S., has continued to hook us up with interesting festival reviews. Here’s his latest from the smaller Trinumeral festival outside of Asheville, NC. Last week, as I realized how quickly another…
  • Outside Lands 2008 | Festival Preview
Today marks the beginning of the inaugural Outside Lands music festival right here in my new stomping grounds of San Francisco. The festival, which is set in the historically hippie-tastic Golden Gate Park, is already on pace to become the…
  • Phish Friday | Old School Gems from August ’87
For this week’s Phish Friday, I thought I’d drop a quick post with a look back at the old-school, a show the band played back on 8/21/87 at Ian McLean’s Farm. This was one of the first truly old-school Phish…
  • Outside Lands: Radiohead Kills It Despite Some Sound Problems
The anticipation for the Radiohead headlining set at today’s Outside Lands festival was clearly in the air and on the minds of everyone in the crowd today, and I think that’s why I felt the entire crowd freak out…
  • Outside Lands: Video of the Radiohead Sound Issues
I managed to get a :30 clip of the second Radiohead sound failure last night, taken during “All I Need.” I was a little upset and I think I screamed a little bit before I took this, so to my…
  • Outside Lands: Photos from Day One (Radiohead, Cold War Kids, Steel Pulse)
Radiohead I’m not going to say that any of these photos are really that good, but I still think it gives a good overview of the vibe of the festival and the highlight of everyone’s nights — Radiohead. Read…
  • Outside Lands Video Roundup
Hidden Track has a roundup of the Outside Lands videos that have surfaced on YouTube so far. The video of “15 Step” is particularly fantastic to me, clearly one of the many highlights of the set for me….

I went to all three days and thought it was, overall, a great festival. I chose to not see Beck so I could get relatively close for Radiohead and it was worth it. I had never seen them before and was mesmerized. Saturday was decent … caught Abigail Washburn (w/ Bela Fleck), Devendra Banhart, Galactic, and Cake. But, I thought Sunday was the best day. We hung out at the Twin Peaks stage all day for ALO, Stars (they were okay, not quite my cup o’ tea), Andrew Bird (awesome!), Broken Social Scene (very cool), and finally Wilco. After all that, we didn’t need to venture over to main stage for Jack Johnson.

All in all … a great festival.

I went Friday and Sunday. The music on both days was very good. But main stage should have been Cold War Kids, Beck and Radiohead on Friday. Also, they have to relocate that stage which had Beck/Widespread on it as the sight lines were horrible unless you were near the stage.

That having been said, Radiohead great despite the glitches. Beck really good. And on Sunday, great performances by Bon Iver (it was nice to see a sizeable crowd checking them out), Sharon Jones and Wilco, who was my favorite performance of the weekend.
