Phish Friday | ‘Prince Caspian’ Hits the Box Office

For the latest on Phish Friday, I thought we’d do a bit of a logical celebration of today’s theatrical release of the The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the movie based on the second book published in The Chronicles of Narnia series. I really don’t have a whole huge emotional connection to the stories that made up the famous books by C.S. Lewis, but I did always love the Phish tune that bares the same name. Here was a version I caught on their last tour ever; technically, this was the last time the band played at Deer Creek in Indiana, a venue that the band tended to enjoy playing at quite a bit. I’m going to miss being able to hop over to that venue from time to time during the summer; that place was amazing.

I meant to get something out to the masses before today to solicit calls for the best ‘Caspian’ ever, because I’m sure everyone has an opinion on that. I didn’t get to it in time, so feel free to let us know what your pick for the best version of this track would be. For me, it tends to be the ones that I would remember, and to be honest I have no real standing memory of this one. I was in the pavilion at the venue that night, which is a treat in and of itself. But listening back now, this one doesn’t really go into any places that the song hadn’t been brought to before; in fact, when stacked up against the rest of the show that was played that night, ‘Caspian’ was probably the yawn-fest that got everyone to take a break and head to the bathroom to get ready for the end of set nonsense. I’m sure there’s a better, more epic version out there somewhere.

Drop some comments if you think you’ve got a better version to feature, and maybe even upload it to sendspace or something to share with the rest of us.

I was always told that when they busted out a Caspian, that meant the boys were having a REALLY good time. If you look at some of the times Caspian was played (MSG 97, 98, etc..) it seems logical.

yeah, i always heard that Trey loved to throw in caspian when they were playing well, having a good time. seemed to work for me, because it always seemed to be after a MONSTER jam and i needed to take a piss, so i loved caspian.

I don’t know if it’s “epic” but the 10/30/98 Caspian get my nod (as does the rest of that sweet filler disk).

Prince Caspian was the first song i ever heard Phish perform live. 12.30.1995 at MSG.

Caspian>2001>Bowie…it doesn’t get much better then that.

Great song, poor movie. I just wrote a review of it on my site…way too much disney, not enough of the original story. Wish this series was in Peter Jackson’s hands.

yeah, Old Man, that’s what my friends said about the movie – wishing it had more elements of the original story.

the makers of Prince Caspian kept to the original story in a lot of ways, but then strayed in others… i had heard they were going to make it into a silly pure-action flick, but thankfully this was not the case

Phish sold about 5 mp3s after Big Cypress, one of which was Prince Caspian. My file was corrupted before I had a chance to burn it. The Everglades “Swamp Phunk” glistened through that song…and was likely the closest guitar work to my most favorite song they did down there- Timber Ho! soundcheck (at least, that’s how I remember it about 8-9 yrs ago), of which I have yet to find a good sounding copy. One can only hope they release that whole shebang from soundcheck to Here Comes the Sun as a complete video or audio set one day.
