From the Editor: To the Future!

by -

As I’m sure most who visit the site have noticed, there hasn’t been a whole lot of new content up on Live Music Blog as of late. I’ve made about the biggest mistake you can make as an Editor — I’ve failed to continue to produce quality content for the site given a few recent changes in my life. I thought I’d give you a little update on the reason for that.

About a week and a half ago, Google announced that they had acquired FeedBurner, the company I work at full-time. I had been with FeedBurner for little over a year and helped to build up the FeedBurner Ad Network, so I was excited to see that the job I’ve worked hard at would continue on at full steam given the acquisition news. It’s clear that the base of FeedBurner publishers is something that Google would want to leverage and build upon, and it seems that the two companies complement each other nicely in terms of product, culture, and overall talent of the employees.

Given that, I’ve experienced an increase in “work” work over the past week and I don’t necessarily see that stopping anytime soon. It was definitely anticipated over the past few months, and my brain has been running the possible scenarios as to how I can continue to produce quality content for Live Music Blog while working at a new employer all while continuing on with my prior duties bestowed upon me at FeedBurner. Stress ensued but the posting largely continued while I mulled it over for as long as I could…

And unfortunately, I’ve simply come to the realization that things need to change around the site over the next few weeks and months as I get settled into my day-to-day over at the all-powerful Google. We’re going to have a lot less time to hit on the major news items each day and I think we’re going to see some repurposing of content over the next few site iterations. I’ve got some ideas, but I’m largely exhausted with the idea that this site needs to continue running for sake of the community that everyone has spent so much time on here. It’s like Jerry, man…and the Dead, man — you gotta keep feeding the machine!

I guess I finally get why Trey broke up Phish. He just knew he couldn’t give it the love that he once could, and he vowed to make a few changes in his life in order to get closer to his perceived state of happiness. That’s what I’m doing…I think.

That said, I’m not saying that the next time you hear from me will be when I’m caught swerving on a road from New York to Vermont with heroin in my car. Live Music Blog is not going to die and it’s not going away anytime soon; I’m only saying that changes will occur and changes will occur quickly. They need do for my sake, and oddly enough, I’m pretty sure Mr. Whitperson feels the same way I do about his own situation.

Hopefully everyone will stay with us through the changes — the best way to do so would be to make sure you’re subscribed to the feed via RSS or email — and hopefully everyone understands that this will indeed be a good thing for all of us in the long-term.

I’ve seen these posts written by other folks in the past and I always knew it was a good possibility that both myself and the site would eventually befall a similar fate. Hell, I think this is probably just the straw that broke the camels back as I’m not even sure I’ve been fully proud of some of the stuff I’ve done on the site over the past couple months. I would never want to half-ass it for the community’s sake and with my own personal reputation on the line, so for now, just sit tight and wait for more updates in the future once I’m done searching for my new muse.

Good luck. Also remember that not blogging is the new blogging.

Good luck – take time for yourself. The blog will be there when you get back to it.

…One of these days, I’m gonna sit down and write a long letter…

I’ll keep visiting and checking the RSS. You run the best live music site on the World Wide Webernet, and I hope it will continue for a long time in whatever form it can. Let me know if you need any help with anything… Weekly photo galleries perhaps? ;-) Thanks for all the hard work.
