Podcast #056 – Bisco in Dub

For our 56th podcast, I went with another thematic mix, but this time with an old stand-by: the Disco Biscuits.

I’ve always been big fan of the Biscuits’ “dub” style of improvisation. While their take on Dub isn’t really the real-deal, classic style of Dub Reggae (by the likes of King Tubby or Augustus Pablo), it’s always been a cool type of dark, instrumental improv that mixes really well with their dancier electronic stylings. I’ve spliced together some of my favorites into a mix I have entitled: Bisco in Dub.

Show notes:
1) 3/31/01 – “Down to the Bottom” intro
2) 12/30/01 – “Pygmy Twylyte”
3) 12/27/01 – “Hot Air Balloon”
4) 3/10/07 – “Orch Theme” from Langerado w/ Matisyahu on vocals
5) 12/28/01 – “Jigsaw Earth” (w/ Marc Brownstein banter spliced in)
6) 3/8/02 – “Above the Waves”
Total running time: 41:16

Excellent job on the podcast my friend!!! This will be in my ipod for a long time!! I noticed you used the greatest Jigsaw Earth ever dropped from the 12/28/01 show which is already a regular listen for me. Great job on the blog, you’re a daily stop down here for sure.

another bisco fan named casey? weird….not sure if i’d concur with greatest jigsaw ever (definitely up there). and 3.31.01 is a confusing show all-around, but filled with some gems for sure.

You want to check out the jams out of the 10-22-99 Above the Waves and 10-9-99 Svenghali.

9-28-99 has a real dubby first set too.

Another riveting podcast from Mr. Whitperson! Well chosen, I think that the jams and transitions here really help bring out something about Bisco that a lot of folks might miss.

Hey thanks! Appreciate all the feedback and the suggestions. The ’99 dub is a little different and didn’t quite fit in with the other tracks. But, with those and few other good cuts, I might be able to pull off a second version at some point.

And that 12/28/01 Jigsaw may not be the “best ever,” but the outro jam is one of the best I’ve ever heard. Mr Barber definitely deserved his props for “sinister jigsaw jam” on that one (that was Mr Brownstein’s spliced in banter at the end there).

What they pulled off at Langerado was really solid, and I’d really like to see the band bring this improv style back more frequently. We’ll see.
