Happy New Year!

by -

I thought I’d get a review up today from a show that’s been fresh in memory since Friday night, and I’m super, super curious to hear (as it JamBase)…

HOW WAS YOUR NEW YEAR’S EVE?

What’d ya do? Who’d ya see? “Dick in a Box” cover? We want to hear about it…

My NYE was not too exciting by any means, but it was just what the doctor ordered for me. I needed a chilled out night and that’s what I did…

I’ll admit, though — I was kicking myself a little bit for missing The Raconteurs shows. I caught their Austin City Limits set on PBS and it’s fannnnnntastic…

Rocked out with The Flaming Lips…Epic show. They landed a spaceship on stage and climbed out of it. Wayne emerged on top in his inflatable hamster ball, walked down the ship, and onto the crowd. The most balloons i’ve ever seen at a show. Even Wayne mentioned that there was quite alot, even for a lips show. The stage was flanked with an army of Santa’s on one side and an army of sexy aliens on the other, with a team of super hero stage hands. Confetti cannons, Bohemian Rhapsody sing-along, banana man, shrimp sushi man, and enough lights to kill a horse. Not too shabby.

Umphrey’s, all three nights. Just incredibly ridiculous times. I was disappointed by the fact that this year there didn’t really seem to be as much of an emphasis on the ridiculousness of the previous two years (like the trapeze artists from 2 years ago). Still, awesome music, crazy times.

Dick in the Box though… I dunno, I just thought that was a little cheesy on their part. On a 3 night NYE-run, there wasn’t really anything that was too out of the ordinary or epic, which was really disappointing.

You must have stepped out for the mullet over, the August, the DBK>cinnamon girl>DBK…or all the new covers (genesis, supertramp)…or the crazy lasers…I mean…yeah, there were no acrobatics, but maybe you should hit up the Circus next year?

    I could go on…

Actually, I don’t really consider Mullet Over-August-DBK-Cinnamon girl (who HASN’T covered that, BFD man) and some other covers… No, I’m sorry, that’s not epic. I’ve seen better shows (not to say that these were horrible, but just nothing amazing) by them. When you’ve seen a phish show where they cover an entire fucking album, or an umphrey’s show where they pull out some crazy guests or mini-kiss, I’m sorry, a good set just doesn’t cut it for a 3 night NYE run, especially when you travel out there from Maryland to see one of your favorite bands (which is what I did). Also, the night you specifically refer to (the first night) was shitty because of all the kids in there. There’s nothing worse than watching a show surrounded by 15 year olds that can’t handle the bottle of Zima they stole from their mom’s fridge, but I digress.
I want spectacle and/or something special (and by that, I mean more than the “lasers”. you really cite that as something special for an NYE concert??? If that’s all it takes to excite you, I’ll send you some laser pointers, you’ll be amazed for weeks), like they’ve delivered before. It’s cool if you’re a fanboy and everything they do gets your rocks off, but I expect something more than a typical umphrey’s concert, which is what each night was, a typical concert.

    Damon…

Florida guy here, flew in from St. Pete…and not to tout stats, but I DID SEE phish cover albums (oh what a time), play all night (one of the greatest nights ever), and many other wonderful things (stash>manteca>stash>dog faced boy>stash, karl p. mini tour (with C&P;>antelope), Terrapin Station, Tower Jam, etc…).
And I loved them all (like my kids). I’m sure if you were there you did as well.
    That was then and there.

Umphrey’s put on three spectacular shows. The music was top notch.
The music always comes first. Spectacle is one thing, music is another. You are just way off on your comments. How many Augusts have you seen to not recognize how epic that was, the building jam, then beautifully back into it. Not to mention Dear Lord has been played no more than 20 times in the entire ten year career of the band. The Morning Song was huge. And how many first time covers were there? And as for pulling out special guests, I’d rather see Taj than mini-kiss anyday. (not to mention mullet over with Cody, or the pig!)

Anyway, sorry you didn’t enjoy yourself, as I said before, I think next year you’d be happier at an actual circus, seems like the music might be secondary to the spectacle.

Some people are never satisfied. I, too, was at all three nights Umph, and though the NYE show was my least favorite of the three on hindsight, it still f*cking ROCKED. And yes, it is annoying when you’re surrounded by 15 year olds — but they have better taste than I did at that age, so you have to admire them, at least a little.

Although, when I was trying to find someone who could tell me the name of the Genesis song, I had to find someone who looked over 30 at least. (He knew what it was. He laughed at my 27 year old self.)
