Tuesday Open Thread: Radio

It’s pretty interesting to see that FeedBurner (full disclosure: I work there) is now distributing more podcasts than there are physical, radio stations in the world. Read more here.

Whether it’s podcasts, streaming radio, traditional radio, or satellite radio, what do you do for your “radio” fix in this crazy, tech-world we live in?

I gave up the radio completely. As someone who never drives, I don’t have much use for the radio anyway. Lately I just depend on my ipod’s “shuffle songs” feature to pick the tunes for me in what appears to be a not-so-random way.

iPod’s shuffle and podcasts DO NOT mix. You’ll get stuck on an 80 minute UM podcast and never make it back to anything else…

My “radio” fix is now podcasts, as minimal as that is even. More bands need to start pushing out SBD-quality podcasts once a month at the very least…

Yeah I’m definitely not a radio guy by any means. Maybe NPR if I’m driving through Iowa or something and I’m in the mood, but usually only when I’m with my parents/family.

On a related side note, they’re opening up a Street-level studio for WPGU, the local Champaign station that plays decent tunes. It’s pretty cool, it’s like New York or something since the people are sitting right there in the studio. That’s my impression of how it’s supposed to be that is. It hasn’t officially opened. There’s also a Apple Student Center in there, which I stopped at today. They’re having a podcast workshop from 1-4pm lol, apparently they brought in some people from California to do it or something like that. If I hadn’t been up for 27 hours right now I’d probably look into it.

I like “pandora” when I’m at work. You just input an artist that you like then it shuffles a bunch of artists that fit within that genre.

Podcasts have been getting a lot of play on my itunes, especially Live from KEXP and KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic.

I also browse Metacritic to see how the newest releases are being reviewed. I have found Pitchfork.com to be pretty good at introducing me to a more diverse taste in non-jamband music…but I don’t always agree with their ratings and sometimes I think they rate poorly based on popularity and highly based on obscurity. The higher the rating, I find the harder to find the album.

But nothing beats going down to my local record store and asking what they are playing over the loud speaker (if i dig it!).

Radio for me is NPR and baseball. KEXP is the only music station I have programmed in.

I tried to get into podcasts, but it hasn’t happened yet.
