Song of the Day: TLG & UM

The New York-New Jersey-Connecticut tri-state area played host to an incredible array of headliners this weekend — the three Northeastern states featuring some of the best touring performers of the past, the present and the future. I subtly just called Trey “the past” in that sentence…did you catch it, or was I that slick?

The region was abuzz: Trey’s Affirmative Action Funtime Band (now with new drummer) rocked the Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford, CT, the Disco Biscuits hosted its long-awaited Drum-Off Show at Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel & Casino and denizens of the Isle of Manhattan were treated to two impressive shows each from Umphrey’s McGee and Tea Leaf Green.

A lucky man, I managed to catch five sets of Tea Leaf Green’s two-night, six-set stand at Coda and Umphrey’s McGee’s two-set, many-encore show at Irving Plaza on Saturday. And as a result of that fact that TLG didn’t exit the stage until well after 3 am on both nights, I can’t open my eyes and my back, legs and feet are in full-scale rebellion. So we’ll have a full report of these shows upon recovery, and that includes an interview with the boys from TLG.

In the meantime, I picked out my three favorite songs from each of the concerts and found some good recent versions to stand in as today nine-part Song of the Day…

My three favorites from Tea Leaf Green, 11/19
The Garden Part III — 12/29/04 KPFA Studios in Berkeley
I’m Waiting for the Man — 9/29/05 The 5 Spot in Atlanta
Sex in the 70s — 6/30/05 High Sierra Music Fest

My three favorites from Tea Leaf Green, 11/18
Kali-Yuga
— 9/21/05 Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach
Baseball Song — 3/11/05 Mystic Theatre in Petaluma, CA
Precious Stone — 9/04/05 moe.down

My three favorites from Umphrey’s McGee, 11/19
All in Time — 3/26/05 Riv in Chicago
Miss Tinkle’s Overture — 4/15/05 Canopy Club
In the Kitchen — 2/12/05 Fillmore Aud

You can also download the Torrents for the second night of TLG’s six-show stand here (11/19) and the last two Umphrey’s shows here (11/18) and here (11/19). Enjoy.

I’ve seen 8 Umphrey’s shows this year, and they have saved my soul. When Phish ended last year I did my best to expand my musical horizons. I was floundering and then I decided to see Umphrey’s at Irving last December.

They blew me away that night and made me interested to learn more. I downloaded a few shows and I was hooked. It has been such a joy to find a new band for which I love 95% of their huge repetoire. They are always busting stuff out, and have a great sense of humor.

With how well Trey is playing and how well Umph’s is playing I am now so excited for the future.

    WORD!
