Song of the Day: The Phish from Vermont

by -

You know, ever since we started the Song of the Day on the Live Music Blog, Justin and I have been trying to pick songs and bands that readers might not listen to all that regularly. So the legendary acts like the Dead and Phish are left out of the mix, because I’m assuming most of you have more discs than you have room for them.

But today I’m feeling very Phishy (perhaps it has something to do with Tuesday night’s “Halfway There” debut), so I’ve been searching the free “stash” portion of nugs.net for some of my favorite versions of what they have stored there.

So even though you might have these tracks at home, or you may at least have heard these before, I offer you these gems (mostly wicked covers) while you sit at your desk and await the 5 o’clock whistle.

Ghost — 5/22/00 — Radio City
Alumni Blues — 4/29/87 — Nectar’s
Runnin’ With the Devil — 8/6/98 — Lakewood Amphitheater
Sneakin’ Sally — 12/30/97 — MSG
Emotional Rescue — 7/28/98 — Sandstone Amphitheater
We’re an American Band — 9/29/00 — Thomas & Mack, with Kid Rock

Including Kidrock in a “Phish gem” is deplorable. Come on man. There is SO much on nugs.net. Why pick that one?

It was more of a “fun time” than anything music worthy.

The whole point of this was to throw up some tunes you could just listen to at the office, while the millions of songs you own on CD sit comfortably in your apartment, waiting for you to get home and throw on that Halloween 94 Reba or Cypress set or Tweezerfest or whatever’s your pleasure.

Do you really think I’m classifying both Runnin’ with the Devil and We’re an American Band as two of the best six songs Phish has ever played? Nah, they’re just excellent day-fillers.

Vegas in 2000 was a very fun time, and that was one of the best weekends of my life. People jeered the Kid Rock appearance, but at the time, the arena was on fire. I’ve seen some rockin’ crowds, some really excited crowds, and this was a fired up audience. Musically it’s not the greatest 30 minutes of Phish, but it’s fun as hell. Mix a hick rapper with four musical nerds and you get a good time.

Part of the legend of Phish is their ability to cover anything, across all genres. It’s what hooks most people into Phish in the first place. They made a TON of new fans in and shortly after 1998, when they reeled off cover after cover, and performed ‘em quite well.

I guess I wanted to include some classic Phish (Ghost), some old school “roots” Phish (Alumni), and then showcase the talents of a fun band, show off how they play well with others and expand on someone else’s music.

Because as I’ve said before, Phish is the greatest inside joke in the history of music. That’s all the Van Halen and Kid Rock choices were, affirmation of that fact.

Ya take a chance and post some Phish, and you get heckled…tough day here on the LMB.
