Phish and the New DVD Secret

by -

Coming on the heels of Phish’s latest release announcement for the Hurricane Relief effort, I’m seeing little speckles and spots of information on the upcoming DVD release, Live in Brooklyn.

Honestly, I can’t figure out why some of this information keeps popping up in the hard-to-find locations yet none of this has been officially announced yet. On Buy.com, they’re saying November 1. On Sunshine Daydream’s site, it’s December 6. I originally thought it would be out by the end of the month. This is a perfect example of some bad (or just premature) information being put out before anyone makes it official; the only way to correct it is to answer it with an official announcement.

Here’s some of the roundup that I could find to try and piece together the untold story. If anyone has any additional info (officlally or unofficially, on-the-record or off…), we’d love to take a look and give credit where due. Send us an email at vibes @ livemusicblog.com.

Live in Brooklyn was filmed on June 17, 2004 at Keyspan Park at Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY. It marked the start of what would be the final Phish tour and was the first date after the emotional news of their breakup was announced. The show was simultaneously broadcast to movie theaters nationwide-arguably the most successful live theatrical broadcast to date, with legions of loyal Phish fans reportedly dancing in the aisles across the country. Included on this DVD are the two complete sets the band performed that day along with sound check footage and three full peformances from the second Brooklyn date. Phish were a cultural phenomenon-touring and recording for 21 years with a remarkably dedicated following who cintniue to celebrate everything Phish. [Sunshine Daydream]

Update: Also on the DVD (from 6/18/04), Bug, Taste, and Tweezer Reprise [thanks Scotty G]

Update #2: Apparently this DVD just keeps getting put on hold or something, but this is the latest I’ve heard….
…the Phish Brooklyn dvd has been pushed back again. The latest was to dec. but now my rhino rep says it is looking like march of 2006. the sales sheet we have says 11/1/05, the rhino business website said 12/20/05 but now it says 3/7/06. if you don’t see any news on the Phish site by this time next month, then it ain’t comin out before xmas.

Let’s get this thing out already…as someone who was there (and very wet, what a fockin’ downpour!), I can’t wait to see what this looks like on DVD.

As I said in this morning’s post below, many fans claim 6/19 at SPAC was the best post-hiatus show Phish played, but I think this 6/17 show was better. Besides the torrential rains, this was a perfect show.

Whoooa, no Jay-Z? That sucks, I kinda wanted to see that on there…I guess they didn’t want to give him any money for it.

He probably wanted full Def Jam distro or something funny like that.

“Wait, Phish does all this by their lonesome? Screw that…”

Was there better run than the NYE Miami Shows post-hiatus??

One could argueably say any of those 4 nights were the best post-hiatus, as well as 2-28-03 at Nassau Coliseum. Haven’t heard much of the last tour (other than Coventry) so I can’t really say one way or the other. But 12/30 w/ PFunk would be hard to beat.

Anyway, very much looking forward to the release of this show. And the band lives on…….

I agree. Not including Jay-Z blows. I’d love to be able to forever relive watching thousands of heads singing along (and knowing ALL the words) to “Big Pimpin.” Way to go heads! I’m sure there were too many rights issues with including the Jay-Z material. One quick story: A friend of mine was working with Trey (and Dave) at that point and said she saw Trey backstage carrying a TV. When she asked him what he was doing, she said he had to move some stuff to accomodate Jay-Z. I guess it doesn’t matter who the audience bought the tickets for, when you’re in Brooklyn, you’re run a distant second to J-HOVA.

That’s funny, Chilly…Trey, doin’ work. I actually didn’t know the words to Big Pimpin (I do know the chorus, I guess that counts) and that was the first time I ever heard 99 Problems, but I had a ball watchin’ him go. My roommate at the time was a HUGE Jay-Z fan, so I was pretty psyched about seeing him. I called him, held up the phone and he was like, “Uh, dude, is Jay-Z at the Phish show?” Classic.

Scotty, I agree on Miami — I only saw the 30th and 31st, but I’ve listened to the first two and I definitely think those were the best four shows post break. How did they go from those shows to quitting in five months?! That’s what I’ll never understand.

I have no clue, Ace. Trey seemed so alive that weekend, so focused, happy!!
His (and the band’s) playing was phenomenal. Extraordinary…..

    Was it all an act?

Are you all retarded? Miami was the worst new years run ever. You want to talk about best post hiatus performances how about IT, or the 20th anniversary run? This keyspan show is terrible at best. Easily the worst show post hiatus until Coventry swept the poles with moving versions of “I forgot the words to the song” and ‘we started this section in wrong key can we just start over”.
